What is Zumba?
Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that combines high-energy music and movements to create a great workout! You DO NOT have to be a dancer to Zumba! Zumba is based on the belief that working out should be FUN and EASY to do. The class utilizes cardio, muscle-toning, and interval training to maximize your caloric expenditure. You'll have so much fun, you'll forget you're working out! What do I wear?
You should wear comfortable clothing and shoes with plenty of lateral cushion and support. An aerobics shoe, dance sneaker, or any other sneaker with lower tread is advised. Too much tread can restrict your side-to-side movement. To keep the MotuSpace dance floor nice, please do not wear your "muddy gardening shoes" to class. Thanks! For more information on Zumba, please visit www.zumba.com.
"This class grew out of a simple question -- Upon whose shoulders does your art stand? My answer is that everything I do as a mover, improviser and performer came not from a person but from a class -- my beginning modern dance class. The class was created by a graduate of the Julliard in the height of Martha Hill's Dance Department. Her teachers were Jose Limon, Martha Graham, Anthony Tudor, Lulu Sweigard among others. The class focuses on physical alignment, mental alignment, movement qualities and ways to relate to the earth, space and audience." -Nina Ryan
"Authentic Movement integrates active imagination and modern dance movement improvisation to create a movement meditation, a journey of discovery that integrates the mind and body. It develops kinesthetic awareness, and helps the practitioner to gain access to the unconscious through movement. Movers explore spontaneous gestures and movements, following inner impulses in the present moment; in this meditative state, they experience relaxation, clarity of perception, self-discovery, and often creative breakthroughs. Many people say it helps them become centered and grounded." -Nina Ryan
