MissionStatement

Motus Dance Theatre is Indy's groundbreaking and newest modern dance company. Created in the fall of 2003, Motus Dance Theatre is dedicated to assisting its dancers in the study of their craft, developing and performing new choreography and strengthening the Indianapolis arts community through collaborations with artists in other fields. A small company, Motus Dance Theatre seeks to provide a unique cultural experience for its audience through inventive works of dance and music coupled with theatrical and visual arts collaborations.

About us

Motus debuted with its first performance, Ignitio, in December 2003 at Marian College's Peine Theatre. Since that time, Motus has grown at a significant rate performing all over the city of Indianapolis at spaces including the Wheeler Arts Center, the Indianapolis Artsgarden, the University of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Arts Center, Broad Ripple High School, the Woodstock Club, the Harrison Center for the Arts, the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Central Library. Motus also performed at the Arts United Center in Fort Wayne, IN, as part of the Indiana Dance Festival. Over the past five years, Motus has collaborated with more than 25 artists and arts organizations throughout the Indianapolis community.

In 2006, Motus performed 15 original works by local choreographers. The company performed with Urban Garden Performing Arts at the Harrison Centre for the Arts and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Red Tape was performed as part of the 2006 Indy Fringe Festival. Unwrapped, a performance inspired by holiday stories from the community, took place in December at Broad Ripple High School. In the summer of 2007, Motus performed Kin, with original choreography and music, at the IndyFringe Festival. The 2007 Fall Performance Series, Emerging Spaces, included a fundraiser for the AYS Art Enrichment Programs, a collaboration with artist, Kyle Ragsdale, performances at the IMA Winter Solstice Celebration, and a performance to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Central Library.

In 2008, we celebrated five years of Motus Dance Theatre with the performance of Rear View Mirrow in March. This production included repertoire from past productions such as Ignitio, Viae and Confessions. In the summer, Wicked Dreams, Pleasant Nightmares premiered at the American Cabaret Theatre during the IndyFringe Festival. 

While there are other modern dance companies in Indianapolis, Motus fills a distinct niche in the community by supporting and performing the works of new choreographers, as well as collaborating with other artists. These aspects make Motus unique in the Indianapolis arts community. The dancers that make up Motus Dance Theatre come from a variety of backgrounds and all have strong dance training. Dancers are auditioned on a project basis but many have been with Motus through several shows. Motus hosts dancers and choreographers who have studied at nationally recognized dance programs across the country.

Motus Core Artists include founder Katie Kasper, Katie Bacone, Heidi Keller-Phillips, Christina Maley, Megan Quiring, Debra Silveus, and Vanessa Stowers-Flora. Former Core Artist, Emily Bhatti, has begun a new career in California and we thank her for her contributions to Motus.
